YOUR TREATMENT FOR JAW PAIN (TMD/TMJ) IN FAIRMONT, WV

DON’T IGNORE YOUR JAW PAIN!

The temporomandibular joint, often referred to as the TMJ or jaw joint, is the hinge that allows your jaw to open and close properly. This joint is disproportionately affected by recurring pain and can often be a cause of major discomfort. You may have heard that a “popping” or clicking sound in the jaw is indicative of temporomandibular disease (TMD), but this is not always the case. Even if a popping sound is present, your jaw may be functioning properly – particularly if there is no pain or discomfort when you use it.

If, however, you notice that your jaw suddenly develops a click that occurs with pain, you should immediately schedule an appointment with Dr. Music to see what the problem is. This is especially true if the pain occurs after a trauma, such as a sports injury.

EVERY CASE OF TMJ/TMD IS DIFFERENT

TMD exists in a broad range of severity. Mild TMJ issues include pain and swelling. Many times, this is result of clenching the jaw either during wakefulness or sleep. This phenomenon, known as “teeth grinding,” can also become so severe that it results in deterioration of the jaw muscle, wearing of the teeth, or even arthritis of the jaw joint. Several methods of therapy can be used to alleviate the condition, ranging from mouth guards to wear at night to biofeedback machines that alert you of the jaw grinding. Injury is also a major cause of TMD, and sometimes surgery or other, less invasive methods are required to realign the jaw so that further damage doesn’t occur.

As always, making a dental health decision is not easy. It requires an in-depth knowledge of anatomy as well as years of experience in the field. Luckily, Dr. Music uses her expertise to help you make a decision that matches your need as well as your budget. Call us today to learn more about TMD and see what we can do for you.
